UK Government policy
The UK government has been set a target by the EC Renewable Energy Directive of obtaining 15% of energy consumption (heat and power combined) from renewable energy by 2020 and potentially 30 – 45% by 2030.
The government has identified that 90% of this will come from eight technologies, two of which are biomass heat and biomass power.

Scottish Government policy
The Scottish government have set themselves the following targets:
100% of electricity consumption from renewable energy by 2020
11% of heat consumption from renewable energy by 2020
