Wood pellets are clean & green and provide a UK based source of sustainable energy

The use of wood pellets for domestic and commercial use is well established in Europe. In some regions of Austria and Germany, up to 40% of houses are heated with wood pellets. Pellets have a high energy density (energy value per cubic meter of space) and behave like liquid fuels. They can be poured into a storage tank, do not rot or degrade (but need to be kept dry) and boiler systems run automatically - just like an oil or gas boiler, with no need for stoking shovelling or re-filling.

Wood pellets offer a convincing reason to switch away from uncertain supplies of heating oil, gas and LPG. There are clear environmental advantages:

Low carbon: Given that CO2 emissions from burning fossil fuels are the Prime Suspect of man made climate change, this means that every business and household can make a contribution by switching away from oil, LPG or gas. The CO2 released when burning wood is exactly the amount of CO2 that was absorbed by the tree while growing. Fossil fuels are net CO2 contributors when they are burnt as there is no mechanism to trap the emitted CO2 and put it back where it came from. Looking at the entire life cycle of making wood pellets (taking into account harvesting trees, transport, processing and burning the final product), Land Energy can demonstrate net savings of 90% of CO2 over oil or LPG.

Financially attractive: The average cost of heating with wood pellets is well below that of heating with gas oil or LPG. Government grants are available to go towards the cost of installing wood pellet stoves or boilers. Wood pellets are sold at reduced VAT, currently 5%.

Sourced in the UK: Using resources that grow on our doorstep makes a contribution towards securing our energy supplies. This becomes more important as worries about possible fossil fuel shortages increase pricing volatility.
