Future Innovators From Doonfoot Primary Tour Land Energy Girvan
P7 pupils from Doonfoot Primary School, Ayr, had an exciting opportunity to explore the world of renewable energy during a visit to Land Energy’s biomass factory just outside Girvan.
Organised as part of their curriculum, the tour was designed to teach pupils about electricity, biomass, and environmental issues, while giving them a real-life glimpse into potential future careers in science, technology, and engineering. The visit also allowed them to see how biomass, energy generated from organic materials, is produced and sold by Land Energy Girvan.
Voices from the Visit: Science, Careers, and the Environment at Land Energy Girvan
Nearly sixty pupils attended over two visits, enjoying guided tours of the factory where they learned about Land Energy’s carbon reduction goals, key manufacturing processes, and the large variety of roles within the company.
Many pupils were inspired by the opportunity to speak with one of the founders of Land Energy, learning from them first-hand that resilience and determination are key to running a successful business. Seeing renewable energy in action gave them a new understanding of how sustainable practices work in real life. Watching the briquette production line in action was a particular highlight, with one pupil saying it made them feel as though they worked at Land Energy.
The environmental aspect of Land Energy’s work also left a lasting impression. Pupils were intrigued to learn that parts of trees that would otherwise be wasted are used in production, reducing greenhouse gases and contributing to a more sustainable future.
The visit also encouraged students to think about their own potential career paths, with one noting that hard work and a willingness to learn can open doors to development and growth within a company. Curiosity was high, with more cutting questions such as “How much do you earn” and “Are you in charge” being relatively common!
Inspiring the Next Generation at Land Energy
David Bone, Marketing Representative at Land Energy, reflecting on their visit, said: “As a company, Land Energy is at the crossroads of environmental issues, engineering, and employability. We hope the pupils enjoyed their visit and can now see how we create Real Environmental Gain across Scotland and the rest of the UK.”
