Land Energy scales up groundbreaking fungi-filled fertiliser to transform UK tree growing
Land Energy has announced the commercial rollout of its pioneering fertiliser technology, developed under the Woodland Grow brand powered by Re-Genus fungi-filled fertiliser at Alba Trees, the UK’s largest cell-grown tree nursery.
The innovation – the result of three years of research and development – replaces synthetic fertilisers and peat with fungi-rich biology and UK-sourced circular materials, helping to grow healthier, more resilient trees while cutting carbon emissions and regenerating soils.
Through its partnership with Alba Trees, the system is set to deliver over five million trees in the next three years, reshaping UK forestry and advancing national climate targets.
Results that speak for themselves
Backed by the Forestry Commission’s Tree Production Innovation Fund, trials across more than 100,000 trees have demonstrated:
- 25% faster growth post-transplant versus conventional methods.
- Lower transplant losses, tackling a problem that sees up to 20% of young trees die within five years.
- Healthier root and fungal microbiome, with early signs of improved pest and disease resistance.
Innovation at the core
Land Energy’s Woodland Grow fertiliser and growing media deliver three breakthroughs:
1. Fungi and Microbial Partnerships – woodland-derived fungi ‘starters’ replicate natural symbioses and replace synthetic inputs.
2. Balanced Natural Nutrition – supporting long-term resilience rather than short-term nitrogen boosts.
3. Circular Raw Materials – sourced from UK forestry by-products, ensuring sustainability and closed-loop production.
Scaling up for impact
Over one million Woodland Grow trees are already in production at Alba Trees, grown in biodegradable Ellepot paper pots. Land Energy and Woodland Grow have also launched pelletised versions of the fertiliser, including commercial 150-tree kits for planting teams, reducing reliance on synthetic nitrogen and saving an estimated five tonnes of CO₂ for every tonne of nitrogen displaced.
Craig Turner, CEO of Alba Trees, commented:
“This partnership embodies everything we believe in – innovation, sustainability, and quality. By combining Alba’s proven nursery systems with Re-Genus’s microbiome expertise, we’re growing trees with the future of the planet in mind.”
Daniel Iddon, Founder of Re-Genus, produced by Land Energy, added:
“By working with nature, we can improve survival rates, grow stronger trees, and regenerate forest soils – while tackling climate change. This is the future of tree growing.”
