At Land Energy, we believe that paying the Real Living Wage is not just the right thing to do – it also makes sound business sense. It aligns people and purpose, creating shared, collaborative direction across the company.
Since committing to becoming a Living Wage Employer, we’ve seen clear benefits throughout the business, from improved employee wellbeing to stronger relationships with our local community. Recognising fair pay as a foundation allows other positive outcomes to follow.
One of the most noticeable impacts has been employee morale. Paying the Living Wage helps our team feel valued and respected, showing that we go beyond the minimum. This has led to higher job satisfaction, stronger loyalty, and a clear uplift in overall morale.
As a result, staff retention and turnover have improved. This not only lowers recruitment costs but also helps build a more stable and resilient workplace culture. With the cost of replacing and training an employee often estimated at 20–30% of their annual salary, the business benefits are clear.
Our Local and Internal Communications Executive David Bone (pictured with Lyndsey Brown), shares his perspective:
“I was once made redundant twice in under two years – a reflection of how precarious the job market can be, particularly in areas reliant on seasonal or unpredictable work. Many people will recognise the sense of uncertainty and frustration that can come with job loss, especially as weeks turn into months.
This is often compounded by low wages. Without the ability to build even a modest emergency fund, the impact of losing a job becomes even more challenging.”
Becoming a Living Wage Employer has also driven greater engagement. When employees feel financially secure and fairly rewarded, they are more motivated and invested in their work. Across the business, we’ve seen improvements in productivity, quality of output, and overall performance.
Our accreditation has also strengthened our reputation as a responsible employer. It demonstrates a clear commitment to fair pay and ethical business practices – something that resonates across every level of the company.
The impact extends beyond our organisation. Based just outside Girvan in South Ayrshire, we are proud to play a role in supporting the local economy. Around 80% of our workforce lives in the surrounding area, and we employ approximately 100 people. By paying the Living Wage, we help support local households and contribute to a stronger, more resilient community – one where people can build stability, engage locally, and put down roots.
Employee feedback highlights just how meaningful this commitment has been. In our 2024 People Satisfaction Survey, pay was one of the top reasons people choose to work at Land Energy, with most employees satisfied with their overall benefits package.
For us, becoming a Living Wage Employer is a win-win. It supports the wellbeing of our team, strengthens our business, and reinforces our commitment to doing the right thing.
Most importantly, it ensures that the people behind our success are able to share in it – regardless of their role.
